Nothing Doing edition by Theodore Voelkel Literature Fiction eBooks

A young man who is being brought up in a strict religious educational system finds his own sensuosity at odds with the requirements of this belief system. He develops his own sense of worship, grounding it in a refined pursuit of the ‘Eternal Feminine’, embodied in various encounters and apparitions of ‘Maria’. In the process he also frames a profound philosophy of life and of the wonder of the unfathomable ‘it-is’.

'Nothing Doing' is a demanding but rewarding read. The narrative prose is finely crafted - rich in imagery, allusion, irony, deft word smithing and I enjoyed taking the time to savor the artistry. I read it at the pace I would read Henry James, Thomas Mann, Salman Rushdie. Sometimes, a little bit says a lot and it needs to be digested. The story itself is multi layered and can be appreciated on several levels . On the surface, it is a penetrating portrait of an uptight 1950's social and religious environment and the obsessions of an adolescent working out his repressed fantasies. In that regard, I was fascinated by the treatment of the manners and social protocols of the Academy Mel, the Lutheran boarding school attended by our hero, Tor Hammersk. The description of the 'Chair Assist' and its attendant sub procedures is both a marvelous (perhaps ' spoofy') tribute to the sublimated sexuality of historical chivalry and the most erotic description of dinner table etiquette I've ever read, wonderfully expressed in terms that would probably pass the scrutiny of the most blue-nosed censor - and also be missed by readers looking for a prurient thrill in familiar explicit terms. Delicious literary serving - I loved it!
Indeed, just following Tor's earliest remembrances of his childhood to his schemes to satisfy his material and spiritual needs is satisfying; you'll visit many interesting places and meet a variety of characters from many different classes and callings - reminiscent of Dickens. But there is another level that taps into history, philosophy, and 19th century Romantic literature that may be unfamiliar to some readers and might put them off. I think the narrative of the events and description of the characters is sufficiently compelling to carry one through any daunting material. Just latch on to one of the characters you relate to and think along with them. Many of them are puzzled too!
